Evaluation Process and Reforms 

IT integration and reforms in the examination procedures and processes (continuous internal assessment and end-semester assessment) have brought in considerable improvement in examination management system of the institution

 The Institute is affiliated to Anna University, Chennai and follows the Examination pattern of the university. Anna University guidelines are strictly adhered to with respect to evaluation process. There are three Internal assesment conducted. The schedules of internal assessments are communicated to the students and the faculty members in the beginning of the semester through institute academic calendar which is prepared based on the college academic calendar and published in the college website.

The institute has reformed the continuous internal evaluation system from faculty centric to student centric. The Institute Examination cell framed guidelines for conducting the CIE in line with calendar of the Affiliate University. As per the guidelines, the following reforms have been carried out effectively for conducting CIE:

  • Adopting semester patterns of examination with continuous evaluation system for all the departments.
  • Digital evaluation system has been successfully implemented for UG and PG
  • Inclusion of seminar project, assignment, seminar presentation as components of evaluation
  • Scheduling of Internal Examination.
  • Preparing the question paper and the answers for the internal examination in the prescribed pattern based on Knowledge level using revised Bloom’s taxonomy and uploaded.
  • Scrutiny of the prepared question paper is carried out by HoD/ Subject expert to ensure the quality of the Question paper.

The positive impact of the examination management system in the      institute as follows:

  • E-governance has been successfully implemented in the Institute. Online entry of Students attendance and internal assessment a mark help to reduce the errors and saves lot of
  • Online filling of examination /revaluation forms helps the students and institute in saving time and in generating admission
  • Question papers are collected both from the Internal (50%)and External(50%) subject experts along with the answer key
  • The institute delivers question papers through online. The Online 15-30 minutes before start of exam Question paper delivery system (QPDS) helps in avoiding leakage of question papers and saves lot of stationery and physical
  • Online Proctoring is done under the supervision of COE by the nominated faculty members with a unique username and password respectively.
  • The answers scripts are coded to prevent disclosure of identity of students; thereby bias/malpractice of any kind is
  • Scheme of evaluation is done by system automatically and the results are generated.

The evaluation for theory courses are assessed in online mode (70%) covering all the five units for end-semester examination and the remaining (30%) for continuous internal assessment.

The evaluation for laboratory courses are assessed in direct mode (70%) that is prescribed in the syllabus for the end-semester examination and the remaining (30%) for the model examination.For each, the student is assessed through laboratory sessions, viva questions and observations.

The evaluation for project course is assessed by conducting periodical project reviews covering key parameters like problem formulations , understanding of the project, presentation skills, communication of ideas , technical knowledge , team work and project management. Major project consists of 200 marks. The project review committee organizes review meetings to assess the progress of all the project batches.

Internal assessment is done through conducting three tests in a semester. Average – best of two IA is considered for finalizing the marks.

The Office of the Examination Cell is fully computerized, with an Examination Management System (EMS) in place in the institution. Examination related processes such as generation of seat numbers, hall ticket printing, students’ performance tracking, results declaration, etc., are all done through the computer software systems.

The Academic calendar published every semester has the dates of the end-semester examination schedule, which is strictly followed. The results of both the UG and the PG examinations are published within 15 days from the date of the last examination conducted. Both the internal and the external examiners are utilized for question papers setting and answer script evaluation. To increase the transparency in the evaluation process, a photocopy of the answer booklet is also given to the students and the option to re-evaluate / challenge evaluation is also provided.

 

More than 50% of the question papers are sourced from the experts of high-ranking institutions. The question papers are carefully designed using the action verbs pertaining to the Bloom’s Taxonomy. The course outcomes are mentioned against each question with cognitive levels.

Internal and external experts with experience in the subject are only called for evaluation. The ratio of the external to the internal experts is 60:40. Automatic Dummy number allotment and scanning machine are used for the secure management of the dummy numbering process and also to scan the evaluated marks. The examination cell follows a double-check system to ensure the correctness of the awarded marks by the examiner in the software.
